Until very recently, little was known of the origins and lifestyles of the prehistoric peoples who thrived in India's sprawling territory and whose heirs gave rise to some of the world's most inspiring religions and art. Since the excavation of Mohenjodaro and Harappa in the 1920s, however, archaeologists in Pakistan and India have uncovered more than 1,000 sites of what is now dubbed the Indus or Harappan civilization. The remains of these prehistoric settlements, most of which cover between two and five acres, are sprinkled over an area some 300,000 square miles in extent - a region twice the size of ancient Sumer. No other Bronze Age civilization had such a vast geographical reach.
