Eustathius Macrembolites, who lived during the second half of the twelfth century, was the author of the romantic novelDe Hysmines et Hysminiae amoribus. The work, encompassing eleven books, represents a twelfth-century attempt to revive the romantic novel of ancient Greece. This is the first critical edition of this novel, previously only found in R. Hercher,Scriptores erotici Graeci II,Teubner, 1859.
