Britain in the Depression : Society and Politics, 1929-39

The first edition of this work interpreted what has been known as the Devil's Decade in a more optimistic light, balancing the evidence of new industries, emerging middle class affluence and a rising standard of living alongside mass unemployment, poverty and poor health. This edition draws on research that has taken place since the appearance of the first publication, without diluting the author's original evidence or conclusions. It includes a revised introduction, with a summary guide to new work and evidence on the period, and, where necessary, insertions of additional material to the main text have been made. An updated and extended bibliography has also been included.
