This report describes experimental investigations into the phenomenon of backdraught in fires. These tests were carried out under closely controlled conditions, and have shown the varying severity that can result with different delays, compartment temperatures and venting conditions. The main lesson for the fire service is the potential severity and unpredictability of a backdraught. Firefighters need to be aware of potential backdraught situations at all times. Guidance is given in the Fire Service Manual and these investigations support this advice.
