This report contains information on the total number of household fires in England and Wales, their nature and cost; based on the findings of the latest sweep of the British Crime Survey (BCS) to incorporate questions on fire. This BCS data provides a useful supplement to the annual Fire Statistics series (2001 edition, ISBN 1851126198), as it includes details on fires not brought to the attention of the fire service. It also enables those groups of the population at highest risk of experiencing a domestic fire to be identified, as well as providing an estimate of the level of smoke alarm ownership in England and Wales and those groups of the population least likely to own an alarm to be identified.
