Collecting reliable and internationally comparable data on the extent of exposure amongst young people to substance abuse (including tobacco, alcohol, inhalants and illicit drugs) is important in order to facilitate a better understanding of trends and inform policy development at regional, country and global levels. This publication, produced by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, gives practical planning guidance on conducting school surveys using standardised methodology. Topics covered include planning, administration and costs; survey methods; sampling issues and questionnaire development; data collection procedure and data reporting. It includes an overview of three ongoing large-scale school surveys carried out in Europe, North America, Central America and the Dominican Republic.
