Guidance on Policies for Waste Management Facilities

This guidance document is intended to assist waste planning authorities (WPAs) in the preparation of development plans, in the context of international and national waste policy. It should be noted, however, that it does not take into account the changes proposed in the Planning Green Paper published in December 2001. Development plans should provide a clear guide for the waste industry and to the public on the land use policies of the WPA for managing waste in its area. The guidance distinguishes between those aspects of waste management planning which are most appropriately dealt with at the regional level, and those dealt with by individual WPAs. It contains a number of case studies of local authorities in order to identify examples of good practice.
