The study evaluates and partly edits largely handwritten sources from local and central archives concerning the relationship between August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) and his parishioners in Glaucha near Halle. It casts light on the background of the unremittingly negative image that has come down to us of the town and parish of Glaucha, in stark contrast to the history of the Francke Foundations. The study also corrects the image of Francke himself, which in the research on pietism has so far been largely modeled on his own self-portrayals. To this end, aspects of ecclesiastical and theological history are linked with socio-historical features.
