This edition of Grimm's »Manual« of 1758 is the publication of a handbook of musical instruction of Herrnhut provenance that has been handed down in manuscript form and has so far found little consideration in research on the subject of Pietism and music. Inspired by the symposium documented in Volume 9 of the »Hallesche Forschungen« series (»Pietism and Song Culture«), the edition provides valuable source material on the phenomenon of Pietist commitment to musical instruction and the innovative form the original Halle model was later to take in Herrnhut.
