The series 'Nazi Crimes on Trial' contains the legal Judgements resulting from trials brought by the German judiciary relating to capital Nazi crimes. Amsterdam University Press is proud to announce the continued publication of this renowned and unique series, as well as the start of the publication of a new series presenting the judgements passed in East Germany from which no material has previously been published. The documents, their significance within the academic world and their publication: On the 27th of June 1945, before a jury in Berlin-Friedenau, the first case of Capital Nazi crime was tried in court. Since then more than 900 trials for similar crimes committed during the Second World War have followed. The term 'Capital Nazi crimes' applies not only to murder and manslaughter, but also to the denunciation, wrongful deprivation of personal liberty, grievous bodily harm, war crimes, perverting the course of justice and crimes against humanity, wherever death has been the consequence. The more than five-decade-long response of the German judiciary to crimes committed under and by a previous system of rule is unique in history. The trials and the legal judgements resulting from them are of great importance to anyone involved in historical, legal or criminological research.
