OASE 78 Immersed

Under the title Immersed, OASE 78 addresses space and sound. This issue presents a reflection on the spatial aspects of sound alongside an examination of the transformative and temporal aspects of space. Immersed concentrates on one specific aspect of the spatial experience, namely sound, presenting new theoretical insights as well as relevant case studies. Sound is a spatial event, a material phenomenon and an auditive experience rolled into one. It can be described using the vectors of distance, direction and location. Within architecture, every built space can modify, position, reflect or reverberate the sounds that occur there. Sound embraces and transcends the spaces in which it occurs, opening up a consummate context for the listener: the acoustic source and its surroundings unite into a unique auditory experience. Recent studies into the ‘auditive’ dimension of various cultural practices have provided insights into experiential aspects that have heretofore remained underexposed. Some of these studies emphasize a critical reassessment of periods and positions, simultaneously suggesting modifications to our current understanding of space and place. Such developments are being seen across various disciplines, but they have not yet attained their full potential within the architecture debate. OASE 78 makes these disquisitions, which are often highly specialized, accessible for and available to the architecture discipline. This edition presents terms such as ‘phonography’, ‘soundscape’ and ‘aural architecture’, elucidating them on the basis of their operational potential within architecture. By reflecting on the physical dimension of sound as well as on a conceptualization of space as transformable and periodic, OASE hopes to broaden the discussion about acoustics beyond purely technical aspects. De OASE 78, Immersed, gaat in op ruimte en geluid. Het brengt enerzijds een reflectie op de ruimtelijke aspecten van geluid, anderzijds bekijkt het vervormbare en tijdelijke aspecten van ruimte. Immersed spitst zich toe op een specifiek aspect van de ruimtelijke ervaring, namelijk geluid, en toont behalve nieuwe theoretische inzichten ook relevante casestudies. Geluid is tegelijkertijd een ruimtelijke gebeurtenis, een materieel fenomeen en een auditieve ervaring. Het kan beschreven worden in afstanden, richtingen en locaties. Binnen de architectuur kan elke gebouwde ruimte de geluiden die daar plaatsvinden modificeren, plaatsen, reflecteren of weerkaatsen. Geluid omarmt en overstijgt de ruimtes waaraan het verbonden is. Voor de luisteraar ontvouwt zich via het geluid een complete context: de akoestische bron en zijn omgeving samengebracht in een enkele geluidservaring. Recente onderzoeken naar de ‘auditieve’ dimensie van verschillende culturele praktijken hebben inzichten opgeleverd in ervaringsaspecten die tot nog toe onderbelicht bleven. Sommige van deze studies benadrukken een kritische herwaardering van periodes en posities, en suggereren wijzigingen in ons hedendaagse begrip van ruimte en plaats. Dergelijke ontwikkelingen vinden plaats in verschillende disciplines en hebben nog niet in hun volle potentie het architectuurdebat bereikt. OASE 78 maakt deze, vaak zeer gespecialiseerde verhandelingen nu toegankelijk en beschikbaar voor de architectuurdiscipline. Termen als ‘phonography’, ‘soundscape’, en ‘aural architecture’ worden in dit nummer gepresenteerd en toegelicht op hun operationele potentie binnen de architectuur. Door te reflecteren op zowel de fysieke dimensie van geluid als op een idee van ruimte als vervormbaar en periodiek hoopt OASE de discussie over akoestiek te verbreden tot voorbij de enkel technische aspecten.
