The death of an infant of mixed race triggers a violent confrontation when the local Baptist church refuses to allow the child's body to be buried in their cemetary, a situation that becomes complicated when the church is set ablaze, a body is found in the rubble, and the dead baby's black father, Elijah Waddell, is accused of the crime.
