Although many differences exist in the role, organisation and function of the prosecution services in the EU-member states, certain classical basic principles for the prosecution service still prevail in a majority of European legal systems. The most characteristic ones are: - prosecution services are independant of the courts; - prosecution services are centralised and vertically organised institutions; - they are hierarchically structured and a line of command exist whithin the organisation; and - they are organised in line with the court system and the administrative structure of the country. After the comparative analysis in the introduction of the book, which dealt with the main topics related to tasks and powers of the prosecution services in general, the various country studies that follow give the reader a vast and sometimes surprising insight in the prosecution services across his/her border.
