This book gives a concise introduction into the basic elements of Belgian public law after the adoption of the co-ordinated text of the Belgian Constitution in 1994. It is in the first place intended for foreign students, but will also serve foreighn lawyers, who wish to acquaint themselves with the Belgian federal state. It treats the organs, functions and powers of the federal, regional and local authorities and the relationship between these authorities and the individual persons. It contains chapters on the background of the institutions, on the general characteristics of the Belgian legal system, on the unique form of federalism developed in order to accomodate the different population groups, on the legislators and the governments, on the judicary, the Council of State and the Court of Arbitration, on the decentralised agencies and the protection according to the fundamental and freedoms of the individual.
