Samenvatting

E.P. Goldschmidt (1887–1954) was a prominent bookseller and scholar well known for his research on early printing and the spread of humanist ideas in Europe. First published in 1955, this volume originated in the proofs for Goldschmidt's inaugural lecture series as Sandars Reader in Bibliography at Cambridge. Although his health was failing, and he was consequently unable to give the lectures, Goldschmidt was able to prepare a set of final proofs before he died. It was decided to publish the work without alterations as a basis for further study on humanism and printing after 1500. This highly readable book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the growth of the print medium and its connection with the dissemination of ideas.
