Building on basic Principles; 25 Years Lawyers for Lawyers 15 april 2011
Samenvatting
During the last 25 years Lawyers for Lawyers has actively been engaged in providing support for lawyers who were threatened, harassed, arrested, imprisoned, disbarred, etcetera, because of their practice as a lawyer. Usually this concerns lawyers working on politically sensitive cases in environments in which the rule of law is not the overriding standard applied by the Governments involved.
Lawyers for Lawyers is not acting in isolation. We felt that the substantive, legal aspects of our work could be strengthened by bringing together a group of eminent lawyers – practicing attorneys, academics and activists – to discuss the relevant law and the possibilities for enhancing and improving existing legal frameworks.
The UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers formed the centerpiece of our discussions which took the form of an Expert Meeting in celebration of our 25th Anniversary. The result of that meeting is to be found in this book, which hopefully will be a support and inspiration for our colleagues, far too many of whom risk their position, their income and the well-being of themselves and their families while discharging of their professional duties. We also hope the contents of this book will inspire lawyers and academics alike to further the development of the rule of law in protection of the independence of lawyers.
