Connectography

This bold and ambitious book is built around the love of globes and maps. Right in the prologue, Parag Khanna shares his fascination that he had since childhood. Without being a collector, I can relate to this. If there is a map on a wall, my eyes will constantly be attracted to the map with all their exciting details.

A journey begins. Khanna takes us on the journey of global connected supply chains as a driving force of how the world is shaped. His fingers on the globe follow the borders and bridges that connect and divide the world. He talks about interrelationships and power play, that is recognized as tugs-of-war. His travels take the reader to Singapore, Panama, Dubai and many other places all over the world. He explores important geopolitical questions related to the hyper-connected multipolar world of today and tomorrow. He addresses issues related to economic coercion, economic development and the distribution of wealth, cities of the future, and resilience of a sustainable future. His analyses and insights are very useful if you are involved in scenarioplanning.

Connectography is a big book with 16 chapters. You may think that it takes courage to start this book and confidence to finish it as well. I have to admit that reading it has taken me a few months. But it was never hard to get back to the book. The chapters can be read almost independently. That means, the book is useful as a reference in any study about the future of global supply chains and connectivity. It is easy to take up a chapter and be informed. Khanna exposes many interesting little storylines full of facts and insights. The book is well-researched and holds many details about many different countries and the whereabouts of governments and industries. Khanna’s book is an impressive achievement. He managed to map the complexity of today and tomorrow’s world in a well written book. His writings speak of hope and optimism to travel the global journey to the future.
